The Landscape
Recent years have produced an historic explosion in new home construction, sales, and mortgage loan originations.  This boom created unprecedented opportunities and profits for many, but it arrived with a darker companion: A parallel rise in the incidents of fraud and malfeasance, not only by quick-buck artists eager to exploit the frenzied atmosphere, but also by honest, uneducated newcomers to the industry. 
While the current downturn has caused many undesirables to leave the industry altogether, their impact will be felt for many years to come.  Federal, state and local officials continue to push for ever-expanding legislation and regulation to reign in the abuses, and are now requiring more rigorous education, knowledge and experience for industry participants.
